How Artists Collaborate with Other Brands

Image
Being the social media platform that is, Instagram is expectedly well equipped with tools that make it easy for users to connect with each other. Artists have been able to take full advantage of this fact, using it to collaborate with other fellow artists and brands. One of the main methods of collaboration on Instagram is shared between artists, with Instagram making it fairly simple to see others’ work and to reach out to them. Assuming the accounts aren’t private, anyone can see all content that is being posted and engage with it through likes and comments. By commenting, one can catch the attention of an artist whose work they are interested in and request that they DM them to discuss a potential collaborative project. However, with bigger accounts that receive more consistent engagement, it is likely that interested collaborators would instead approach artists directly through their DMs, as a mere comment could very well get lost or ignored amongst all the others. These collabor...

How Artists Develop Their Own Brands on Instagram

Image
Before an Instagram artist has the opportunity to promote their content to a broad audience or even make money off their works, it is essential that they are first able to establish a brand for themselves. An artist’s career is known to be highly competitive, with this fact also holding true when it comes to the careers of artists who are utilizing digital platforms. Instagram artists are no exception to this, with there being a constant feed of independently produced works that compete to grab the attention of a potential audience. On top of that is all the other content hosted by Instagram which can also indirectly detract attention from an artist’s work. Because of these obstacles, artists must be able to make their work stand out by creating a brand for themselves; one that brings audiences always coming back for more. While easier said than done, establishing a brand is indeed possible, as evident by all the artists who successfully have made a name for themselves on Instagram. ...

How Artists Earn Money and Build Careers Through Instagram

Image
Now that I’ve gone through the kind of art you can expect to see posted on Instagram, my blog is going to be shifting gears and focusing more on how this social media platform is being used by artists and more for financial gain. For this week, I’m going to start by focusing on independent artists who have managed to successfully utilize their Instagram accounts to promote and sell their works. First are those doing freelance work, consisting of a broad spectrum of artists who vary based on skill, notoriety, and commitment to the job. Many of these artists, on Instagram in particular, are not full-time artists and instead simply use their page to post occasional art and commissions. It is common to see these artists post the occasional sample of their work to establish their style, essentially advertising what they have to offer to any potential buyers. When they’re open for commissions, they will usually make it known by updating their page’s description and/or through an update...

Photography on Instagram

Image
With digital illustration covered last week, I’ll be using today’s blog post to explore photography’s presence on Instagram. With photography, the individual photos themselves can be considered works of art depending on the artists’ intentions. Additionally, photography can also be utilized to capture and share other art forms. With Instagram, most posts are unsurprisingly made up of photos captured by its users. However, only a selection of said posts is actually composed of photography that is being used as an art form. Though it can be argued that all forms of photography are art in their own ways, I am more so referring to instances in which the medium is deliberately used to frame subjects with artistic intentions in mind. For example, when looking at the two images below, it is fairly clear that the right was likely taken to share a moment in time that was spontaneously captured by the poster. On the other hand, the left photo was clearly framed with careful attention to the ...

Digital Illustrations on Instagram

Image
As mentioned in my last post, I will be going over the two most prominent kinds of art that are found on Instagram: illustrations and photography. This week, I’ll start by exploring the types of content that make up illustrations. Such Illustrations aren’t produced through one particular medium, with artists across the platform specializing in a variety of tools and methods that work towards making their content unique. However, I’d like to primarily focus on digitally-produced works this week, as the physical ones require photography to capture.  One of the most common approaches towards being an artist on Instagram is to post illustrations that have been produced through digital means. An advantage that this approach has over other more traditional means of illustrating is that the artists can directly upload their content straight to Instagram. Any kind of physical art, such as sketches or paintings, would have to be photographed first; these added processes add additional wo...

What Makes Up Art On Instagram?

Image
To get this blog kicked off, I wanted to start by identifying the most common kinds of art that one would expect to find on Instagram. To determine this, I decided to search for #art under the explore page, as doing so would bring up all of the latest and trending posts that happen to fall under this broad category. Doing so resulted in a massive catalog of 598 million posts, with the content that made up these posts falling primarily under illustration, photography, and a combination of both. This distribution of content applied to both the top posts and most recent posts under this hashtag, with the majority consisting of digital illustrations or physical ones that were captured with a camera. I was at first surprised by the fact that photography didn’t make up the majority of the results, considering how the platform inherently seems to favor photography as a medium. However, I soon considered that many posters of these works likely omitted using #art to categorize their content...

Introduction

Image
Hi! I’m going to be using this blog to explore how Instagram is being utilized as a platform for artists. Today, Instagram is one of the biggest platforms for sharing art, hosting an expansive collection of works that only continues to grow.  Credit: @vexx (Instagram) But what makes this Instagram particularly so compelling to artists? I hope to solve this question by examining some of its specific users, the kind of art they post, and the features that they utilize to share their content. As I continue this blog throughout the semester, I plan to begin focusing on how businesses, organizations, and professionals have been able to take advantage of this platform and art-related media to market their ideas, products, and brands to targeted audiences.  I am excited to conduct this blog, with the topics of social media and art being of great interest to me. Seeing as how I am going to be creating and running my own art-related Instagram account for my Digital Enga...
