How Artists Collaborate with Other Brands
Being the social media platform that is, Instagram is expectedly well equipped with tools that make it easy for users to connect with each other. Artists have been able to take full advantage of this fact, using it to collaborate with other fellow artists and brands.
One of the main methods of collaboration on Instagram is shared between artists, with Instagram making it fairly simple to see others’ work and to reach out to them. Assuming the accounts aren’t private, anyone can see all content that is being posted and engage with it through likes and comments. By commenting, one can catch the attention of an artist whose work they are interested in and request that they DM them to discuss a potential collaborative project. However, with bigger accounts that receive more consistent engagement, it is likely that interested collaborators would instead approach artists directly through their DMs, as a mere comment could very well get lost or ignored amongst all the others. These collaborative offers are also often encouraged by artists themselves, many of whom display their business emails within their bios to provide an even more direct and secure means of contacting them.
Thanks to all of these discussed social features, Instagram allows artists to establish connections with practically anyone who happens to have an account of their own. One example I found was between artists Zeina Alkattan and Merrick Adams. Alkattan, who lived in Dubai, would take photographs tied to social issues in her country; Adams was an American digital artist/designer who took notice of her works when browsing her Instagram. After reaching out to her, they began to collaborate to create new works which incorporated both of their talents. Though strangely not present in the example below, artists typically credit their collaborators’ account to bring attention to their work; shared exposure is often a big motivator for collaborative efforts.

Instagram also helps to build partnerships between artists and brands who are interested in incorporating their talent towards their marketing campaigns. In addition to the brands promoting the collaboration, it is common to see the actual artist further promote on their own page. In addition to exposure, brand collaborations offer financial incentive for artists' to participate.
